William B. Wood, Sr., 72, of Oak Hill, WV died Thursday, May 14, 2015 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a fight with lung cancer.
He was born January 8, 1943 in Brackens Creek, WV son of the late John D. Wood and Mary Secrist Wood.
He served in the Navy for 30 years in various ports around the world, served two tours in Vietnam, and rose to the highest enlisted rank of Master Chief. When he retired, he spent his days gardening and working in a local hardware store in Woodbine, GA where many people would come just to have coffee with him and chat about the local gossip. Finally, he returned to his land of rolling mountains, West Virginia, to live the rest of his years in the beauty of the hills and his with his family.
He leaves his three children, Carmella Wood, daughter, Bill Wood, Jr. (Kelly Wood), son, and Karma Wood, daughter; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Wood, Jeremy Wood, and Jessica Wood; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob Sherlock, Alyssa Sherlock, Jackson Wood, and Jonah Wood.
Other survivors include four sisters and one brother; Marcella McClung, Doris Bradley, Ardella Kaster, Evelyn Johnson, and Rondal Wood (Yvonne), along with nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Karolyn Wood, sisters Justine Wood Sampson, Betty Jo Wood and a brother, John Edward Wood.
The memorial service will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Sunday, May 17. Visitors are welcome to come at 2 PM and the service will be held at 2:30 PM.
