William R. Thompson

William Robert Thompson, 92, of Cary, NC died on Tuesday, December 07, 2004 at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary, NC. Born February 20, 1912 at Dorothy, WV he was the son of the late Winfred Moten Thompson, Sr. and Bertha Hunter Thompson. After graduating from Oak Hill High School he went to Washington, D.C. to seek work. He lived most of his life in the Washington area, where he earned his law degree, married twice and raised 4 children, was involved in Civic Association, Lions Club and Scouting. Mr. Thompson worked in the legal arm of the Post Office Department and ran a private law practice until his retirement in 1994. After he retired he moved to his family home in Oak Hill, WV, and then to Cary, NC. He served his country in the Pacific in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and was honorably discharged at the end of the war. He taught a love of words, logic and music to his children. By example, he taught a deep love of our country and a respect for people from other countries, cultures and all walks of life. He is preceded by sisters, Ruby Baumgartner, Mary McKee, and Virginia Stevens and brothers Ralph and Harvey Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Lois Thompson, of Radford, VA; four children, Douglas Thompson of Canyon Lake, CA, Linda Sollenberger of Tampa, FL, Sandra Jaronski of Radford, VA, and Rick Thompson of Cary, NC, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Mote Thompson of Ashland, KY and James Thompson of St. Augustine, FL and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Friday, December 10, 2004 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. A funeraI service will be held on Friday, December 10, 2004 at 11:00 am at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, WV with Dr. John Sauvage officiating. The burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #3110, Oak Hill.
