Dr. William Ashby Sutphin, Jr., 72 of Kernersville, NC died March 17, 2008 at High Point Regional Cancer Center High Point, NC following a long illness. Born January 9, 1936 at Summerlee, WV he was the eldest son of Bessie Cantley Sutphin of Oak Hill, WV and the late William A. Sutphin. The Rev. Dr. Sutphin was a graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill, Trinity College, Clearwater, FL and Eastern Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. He pastored churches in Clay County, WV, Parkersburg, WV, Rich Creek, VW and Thomasville, NC. Other survivors include his wife, Janet Akers Sutphin, one daughter, Deneen Jarrel and husband, Brent of Trinity, NC; two sons, Steven Sutphin and wife, Angie of Thomasville, NC and Dale Sutphin and wife, Stephanie of Low Gap, NC; one brother, Dennis R. Sutphin and wife, Linda of New Port Richey, FL; one sister, Susan K. Johnson and husband, Randy of Lewisburg, WV and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Cumby Funeral Home, High Point. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the Green Street Baptist Church in High Point with Dr. Robert Steele. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park in High Point.
