William Edward Anderson

April 12, 1925 — April 1, 2015

William Edward Anderson, 89, of Oak Hill, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division, Charleston WV, following a long illness.

Born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925 at the family farm in Teaberry, WV, near Lewisburg, he was the son of the late Samuel Beard Anderson and Laura Yates Anderson. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 67 years, Mary Sue Thurman Anderson and brothers Buford, Jesse, Kyle and Dale and sister Kathryn.

Mr. Anderson grew up in Lewisburg, WV, on a large family farm. He always maintained his love for farming. In 1942, he moved to Mount Hope to work for the C&O railroad. He was a coal miner at Garden Ground mine and worked both jobs for several years. He also taught Math and English at the vocational school in Mount Hope. Also, while living in Mount Hope he attended the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church and was very active in the men's work. He was a member of the Mount Hope Lions Club, served on various Democratic committees, coached Little League baseball and was a member of the McDonald Warren Masonic Lodge in Mount Hope where he recently received his 50 year pin.

He was an avid bowler and bowled for several leagues, and even bowled a few 300 games. He enjoyed golfing with his brothers, and spending time at the beach with his family and friends. He never met a stranger and always had a story to tell.

He and his wife moved to Oak Hill several years ago.

Many happy memories will be shared with those who remain: daughter Sandra Anderson Flint and husband Jack of Oak Hill, grandchildren, who he absolutely adored and who affectionately called him “Gakie”, are Megan Flint of High Point, NC and Kevin Flint and wife Hanny of Oakton, VA. Several very special nieces and nephews and the great neighbors who were always looking out for him. And a longtime friend of Sandy's, Linda Appleton Dangerfield, who he will always be the “boss of”.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New River Humane Society's Animal Shelter at P.O. Box 955, Fayetteville, WV 25840, in honor of his great-grand dog, Layla.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm Monday, April 6, 2015 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, WV with Rev. David Sneed and Rev. Bryan Knight officiating. Burial will follow with Masonic rites at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV
