Wedsel L. Young, Jr.

November 1, 1937 — July 31, 2012

Wedsel Lewis Young , Jr. 74, beloved father and grandfather was called home to be with the Lord and his loved ones who had gone before him on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Beckley, WV after a long illness. Born November 01, 1937 at Huntington, WV he was the son of the late Wedsel L. Young, Sr. and Susan Brash Young. Mr. Young was raised in Thurmond, WV by his loving adoptive parents, the late Blanche Young and William "Willie" Hartenstein after the passing of his mother, Susan, when he was just a few days old. He married Drema Joyce Todd and together they had three girls. After living in Wilmington, DE where Wedsel worked for the Delaware Battery Plant, he and Drema moved their family back to the home in Thurmond where he had been raised to raise their daughters. They lived there until 1994 when they moved to Oak Hill. Mr. Young became a resident of the VA Medical Center in Beckley in July of 2007 after complications from a series of mini strokes left him unable to live at home. Wedsel was a 1955 graduate of Mount Hope High School and a veteran of the US Navy. He enjoyed fishing, bingo, watching the greyhounds run, and conversations with his family and friends. Anyone who met him had no doubt as to his favorite sports teams, the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals (who he watched at every opportunity), or his love of ice cream. He is a former Thurmond Town Council member. His wife, Drema Joyce Todd Young, son-in-law, Craig Williams, a brother, Dwayne Zinnie and a sister, Sarah Young preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory and truly miss him are his three daughters, Susan Diana Young of Charleston, Izetta (Mike Roberts) Young Collins of Charleston and Lilly (Kevin) Williams Sears of Elizabeth, seven grandchildren, Chasity (Josh) Boyette, Ashley Collins, Adam Collins, Rachael Williams, Cassie Williams, Alexander Sears and Grace Sears and four great grandchildren, Alexis and Gabrielle Boyette, Angel Schroeder and Kyler Collins. He is also survived by one sister, Eleanor (Charlie) Tomczak of Delaware, cousin, Harry Young of Fayetteville, brother-in-law, Donald Adkins of Thayer, his favorite grand-puppy Skippy, many nieces and nephews and his extended family and friends at the VA Medical Center in Beckley. Funeral services will be on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Chaplin Mark Iobst officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110. Friends may call from 12:00 Noon until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
