Walter Zemonek, 87, of Oak Hill, WV went to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 28, 2007, at his home. He was born in Portage, PA, on May 10, 1920, the son of the late Blaise and Alice Kamalski Zemonek. Then at six years of age his family moved to Scarbro, WV, and later resided in Oak Hill. He was retired from the Fayette County Board of Education as a carpenter. He loved making beautiful furniture from trees he cut down himself. He also enjoyed raising flowers and growing a garden. Walter served in World War II as a technician Fifth Grade Headquarters Company, Sixtieth Signal Battalion in the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia. He was awarded three Bronze Stars and a good conduct medal. He was the last surviving child of seven children one of which was his younger brother, Ted Zemonek, whom he spoke of often and who served as an airplane gunner and was shot down and killed in Germany at the age of 21. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Georgia Zemonek. Left to cherish his memory include his four children, Dee Bowyer and husband, Jr., Sharon Blackburn and husband, Charlie, Donny Zemonek and wife, Tracy, Lee Zemonek and wife, Penny, a very special "daughter of the heart", Patty Zemonek. Also surviving two step-children, Peggy Warrick and husband, Trap, David Kees and wife, Carole and two step-grandchildren, Shannon Jenkins and Tammy Terry; one granddaughter, Andrea Coleman and husband, Nathan, two grandsons, Chris Sanson and Wesley Zemonek; two great grandchildren, Caleb Coleman and Christina Sanson. A special thanks to Michelle Worrell, Lisa Higginbotham and Linda Blackburn, who were so kind in caring for Dad. A private service will be held.
