Walter Dexter “Dean” Holdren, Jr., age 91, of Weirwood, WV passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at his residence at Weirwood, WV. Born October 23, 1918 at Bertha, Summers County, WV, he was the son of the Walter Dexter and Ethel Blanch Lilly Holdren, Sr. Mr. Holdren was a retired coal miner and self employed carpenter and minister. He was a member of the Pax Church of Christ and was an avid farmer, hunter and enjoyed working with wood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Mable "Dolly" Foster Holdren; by three son, Roger D. Holdren, Cyrus W. Holdren and Dan Holdren; by four sisters, Lara G. Johnson, Lessie C. Meador, Ruth L. Scott and Annie E. Pettry and by two brothers, Ted Holdren and Arthur Holdren. Surviving are five sons : Franklin D. and wife Janice Holdren of Maryville, TN., Carl Joe and wife Joyce Holdren of Bristol, VA., Walter Glen and wife Peggy Holdren of Weirwood, Benjamin A. Holdren of Weirwood, Billy J. and wife Tammy Holdren of Weirwood; eight daughters, Patty A. and husband Jim Pierce of Onieda, TN., Virginia L. and husband Ernie Johnson of Chesapeake, VA., Ethel F. and husband Paul Davis of Chesapeake, VA., Debra J. and husband Robert Harmon of Caledonia, Miss, Kathy L. and husband Byron Euler of Cottageville, WV., Lisa A. and husband Mike Allen of Powell, TN., Christine R. Holdren and Mary E. Holdren, both at home at Weirwood. Alson surviving are two sisters, Ruby F. Adkins of MacArthur, WV, E. Pauline Harrell of Beckley and one brother, C. Arnold Holdren of Tuscaloosa, Al. 25 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 from the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Mt. Hope with Minister Benjamin Holdren officiating. Burial will follow in the Elgood Cemetery at Elgood, Mercer County, WV. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
