Victor L. Hartnett, 87, of Birch River, Nicholas County, WV passed away in his sleep on December 29, 2012 after a short illness. Victor was born in Moravia, New York on April 17, 1925 and grew up on a farm overlooking the Finger Lakes. He was the son of the late Howard W. Hartnett, a farmer, and Nellie Forrest Hartnett, a school teacher. He had four siblings: the late Dr. Bernard Hartnett, Donald Hartnett, Delores Hartnett Pope, and Coral Hartnett all of upstate New York. Victor was a WWII veteran, who served in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and provided for his family by working as an electrician in many states and in Greenland. Vic had four biological children with his first wife, the late Helen Audrey Hobson Hartnett. He was preceded in death by three sons; Victor Dou, Mark Steven, and Keith Thomas, and is survived by his daughter Vickie Hartnett Dinse, who currently resides in Buffalo, New York. In 1970, Vic married the late Jane C. Lindenthal and added six step-children to his family: David, George, Agnes Lindenthal Casto, William, Donald, and the late James Lindenthal. In addition to his 10 biological and step-children Vic is called grandpa by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and his family moved to Braxton County, WV in 1976 and then to their much loved farm on Anthony Creek, Birch River, WV in 1980. Disabled in 1984, due to a well fought battle with Esophageal Cancer, he enjoyed working and maintaining the farm and running his bulldozer. He will be missed by family and friends and remembered as an honest, hardworking, gentle man who lived a life of integrity and dignity. His body has been gifted to the WVU Human Gift Registry. The family is planning a memorial service 2:00 PM, on May 18, 2013, at the Birch River Fire Department. Friends of the family are welcome to attend and are invited to a dinner afterwards.
