Velma Gay Criss Bowling, 78, of Oak Hill, WV, passed away at home in her sleep Saturday, September 25, 2010. Born June 4, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Amy L. Allen Criss and Ebb B. Criss of Harvey, WV. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Roger G. Criss and sister, Doris E. Criss. Survivors include her loving husband of 60 years Carl Elmer Bowling; their four children Dr. C. Gregory Bowling and wife Susan of Lake Charles, LA, David Bowling and wife Jennifer of Oak Hill, WV, Debbie Bowling of Mullens, WV, and Sherry Bowling of Ashland, OH; grandchildren Michael, Jonathan, Stephan, Joshua, Samantha, and Bailey Bowling, and Susie Freeman; great-grandchildren Anna and Will Freeman; sisters Lois Hall Robinson and husband Milton of Oak Hill, WV, Phyllis Sullivan of Charleston, WV, Mary Lou Sullivan of Raleigh, NC, and Amy C. “Connie” Holly of Oak Hill, WV; and sister-in-law JoAnn Criss of North Olmstead, OH. Velma grew up in the Harvey United Methodist Church and was a member of the Oak Hill First Brethren Church. She and her husband ran Bowling’s Market for 25 years in Oak Hill. She devoted her life to raising her family and sharing her wisdom and understanding with all those around her. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Monday, September 27, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Delmas Wolfe and Rev. William Skeldon officiating. Interment will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
