Ulysses Payne,78, formerly of Pax, WV died July 18, 2005 in a nursing home at Lake Placid, Florida. Ulysses was a 1946 graduate of Pax High School where he excelled in basketball. He was the first to be drafted in the U.S. Army from Dade County, Florida during the Korean War. His tour of duty was served as cook at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He returned to Miami Battery and Electric where he retired after many years of employment. Ulysses was very proud of the United States and displayed the flag proudly. He loved the Pax area and enjoyed visiting with family and friends during the Pax community reunions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Josie Humphrey Payne and Okey Payne; his sister, Melissa Payne Gum and his brother, Franklin Payne. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Flora Sutphin Payne; his son, Larry Davis; his sister, Mary Jo Morris and husband, Glen; John A. Payne and wife, Eulene, Waymon H. Payne and wife, Jean, and Lowell Payne and wife, Janet; sister-in-law, Mildred James Payne; brother-in-law, Wallace Gum; and a grandchild, nieces and nephews. May Ulysses rest in peace in our hearts with many happy memories.
