Thelma Mae Groah Thurbon, 79, of Rock Lick, WV passed away on Saturday, May 07, 2005 at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV following a sudden illness. Daughter of the late Ira and Violet McCormick Groah, she was born on February 27, 1926 at Ironton, OH and grew up in Rock Lick. She was a long-time member of the Rock Lick Community Church, contributed to Christian and Jewish charities and brought much joy to her family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, gardening, shipping, spending time with family and friends and was a talented sketch artist and gifted cook. Her generous, intelligent nature and kind, loving spirit will be sorely missed in this lifetime by those who knew and loved her. Following her marriage on May 6, 1944 in Columbus, GA to John D. Thurbon of Minden she worked in diners and cafeterias in Charleston and Virginia during World War II. They moved back to Minden in the 1940's where she reared three of her four children. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Thurbon; two sons, John Edward Thurbon of Oak Hill in January 2002 and Paul David Thurbon, who died at three months of age in 1950. Left to mourn her passing are two daughters, Sharon Nunn of Rock Lick and Rita Shifflett and husband, Daniel, of Oak Hill; daughter-in-law, Sandra Thurbon of Oak Hill; eight grandchildren, Paul Thurbon and wife, Terri, of Beaver; Heather Thurbon of Morgantown; David Nunn and wife, Leslie, of Maryland; Jessica Shifflett Farrish and husband, Ted, of Beckley; John Shifflett and wife, Karen of Oak Hill; Matthew Shifflett of California; Michael Shifflett of Oak Hill and Lauren Shifflett of Oak Hill. She also leaves behind two great grandons, Aiden and Kaleb Shifflett both of Oak Hill. She was looking forward to the birth of her third great grandchild in October. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Services will be on Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at 11:00 A.M. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill with Rev. Jerry Sears and Pastor Bill Snead officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill WV.
