Steve Szuch

Steve Szuch , 92, of Mount Hope, WV died on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.

Born June 27, 1922 at Charleston, WV he was the son of the late James Szuch, Sr. and Mollie Demyan Szuch.

Steve was a graduate of Mount Hope High School and continued to be a big supporter of the Mount Hope Mustang football team for many years. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the US Marines and served from 1941-1945 in WWII's Pacific Theater. He earned a promotion to Corporal and participated in the ceremony of the Surrender of Japanese Military Forces in the area of Tsingtao China, 25 October 1945.

Steve was a member of the Mount Hope Fire Department for over 60 years. Since the age of 7 he was a faithful member of the Mount Hope Baptist Temple and later served as a Deacon. He was Assistant Postmaster at Mount Hope for many years. He later became a Federal Mine Inspector with the US Bureau of Mines, retiring in 1985.

He was an avid outdoorsman and thoroughly enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and riding ATVs at his camp in Bath County, VA. He was a member of the Senior League at Bridge Haven Golf Club. Some of his favorite times were spent with his close friends Richard Allen and Delbert Adkins.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Luis Szuch, Andy Szuch, Alex Szuch and James Szuch, Jr. ; sisters, Margaret Markonic and Elizabeth Kizer; and a beloved grandson, Steven (Stevie) Dixon.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years and the love of his life, Eula R. Szuch; a son, David E. Dixon and wife, Mary of Mount Hope; granddaughter, Charity Bonafacio and husband, Mike of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Susie Garvin of Oak Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Pastor Jamie Bailey from the Fayetteville Family Worship Center officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley WV 25801.
