Sandra Wallen Humphrey

December 21, 1946 — October 15, 2014

Heaven gained another angel on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Sandra “Sandy” Sue Humphrey of Mount Hope, WV went home to be with the Lord after a long, courageous fight with cancer at the age of 67. She was a devoted Christian and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, mother-in-law, and friend.

Sandy was born in Eastgulf, WV on December 21, 1946 to Edna Louise Arnold Wallen and the late Andrew Jackson Wallen, Sr.

She grew up in a large, loving family with 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Sandy graduated from Stoco High School in 1964. After high school she spent time working in Washington, DC for the Department of Agriculture. She later worked for the New River Coal Company in Mount Hope as the Secretary Treasurer, and finally the Mine Safety and Health Administration in Mount Hope. Sandy married Jim Humphrey in 1982 and they made their home in Mount Hope. In 1983, they had a son, Jimmy. She was a devoted mother but also managed to maintain a successful career. In 2014, Sandy became a grandmother, which she enjoyed immensely.

Sandy worked for over 25 years at the Mine Safety and Health Administration in Mount Hope as the Supervisory Management Analyst. She was a member of the Mount Hope Lion’s Club, past President for the Fayette Federal Credit Union, a Certified Professional Secretary, and has held the position of Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star Organization. Sandy was also a faithful member of the Mount Hope Christian Church for over 30 years.

In addition to her mother, Sandy leaves behind many family members which include her husband, James Humphrey; one son, James Humphrey and wife, Tarin of Mount Hope; two daughters, Lori Ann Ward and husband, Frank of Corliss and Crystal Murdock and husband, Anthony of Oak Hill; three brothers, Jack Wallen, Jr. of Mullens, Harold Wallen of Indiana and Rick Wallen of Beckley; and two sisters, Rita Porter of California and Kay King of Mullens.

She is also survived by five grandchildren, Harper Reece Humphrey, Kendall Murdock, A.J. Murdock, Kelsey Ward and Frankie Ward.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Minister Dennis Kinzer officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope on Friday, October 17, 2014 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
