Russell Edwin Edwards Sr., 80, of Oak Hill, WV died on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV. Born July 23, 1926 at Kingston, WV he was the son of the late Fitzhue Lee and Ella Cleo Phillips Edwards. He was a retired coal miner. Russell was a Protestant by faith, a member of Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. & A.M. and the UMWA for which he had served on the Safety Committee for District 17 and Secretary/Treasurer of Local #5948. He served in the US Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Richard Wisman and staff of the Raleigh Regional Cancer Center. A brother, Roy Lee Edwards preceded him in death. Survivors include daughter, Susan Edwards of Fayetteville, WV; son, Russell Edwin Edwards, Jr. of Spruce Pine, NC; sister, Lucille Smith of Manchester, MO; three grandchildren, Robin Thomas DiBartolomeo of Rockville, MD, Kari Edwards and Jeremy Edwards both of Madison Heights, VA; one great granddaughter, Katelyn Edwards of Madison Heights, VA and a special sister-in-law, Dori Holdren Saunders of Cross Lanes, WV. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Friday, September 1, 2006, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Services will be on Friday, September 1, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill with Rev. Mark Seacrist officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park. Oak Hill WV with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110, Oak Hill.
