Roy "Shorty" Withrow

Roy "Shorty" Donald Withrow , 82, of Scarbro, WV died on Thursday, June 03, 2010 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV. Born December 24, 1927 at Scarbro, WV he was the son of the late Fred and Elizabeth Blake Withrow. He was a 1946 graduate of Oak Hill High School. Shorty was a long-time employee of New River Coal Company, an active member of the UMWA and was a US Army veteran. He was a former board member and volunteer of the White Oak PSD and helped organize the local Adopt-A-Highway program. Mr. Withrow was a founding member and board member of the New River Health Association and a member of the Plateau Club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and tolerated spending time with his family. The family would like to express their appreciation to Helen "Cooky" Bernath and Leon Jarosz for their loving care and friendship to Shorty. His wife, Elizabeth Ann "Sis" Bokovitz Withrow and an infant daughter, JoAnn preceded him in death. Survivors include four sons, David Withrow and wife, Donna of Scarbro, Dale Withrow of Battle Creek, Michigan, John Withrow and wife, Debbie of Oak Hill and Steve Withrow of Scarbro; daughters, Mary Gregory and husband, Gordon of Prosperity and Carol Withrow of Rockledge, FL; three brothers, Fred Withrow and wife, Melba of Garland, TX, Leslie Withrow and wife, Dorothy of Riverview, Michigan and Ron Withrow and wife, Samantha of Rockledge, FL and one sister, Lora "Pud" Winner and husband, Bill of Rockledge, FL. Five grandchildren, Amanda Withrow of San Francisco, CA, Lori Jo Withrow and husband, Jeff of Los Angeles, CA, Scott Withrow and wife, Liz of Fairdale, Sean Withrow of Scarbro and Mary Beth Withrow of Scarbro; one great grandchild, Faith and several nieces and nephews also survive. Services will be on Monday, June 7, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Sunday, June 6, 2010 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
