Roy Emmett Stevens, age 89, of Oak Hill, WV went to be with the Lord on June 18, 2016 at the Nicholas County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness with Alzheimer's.
Born on November 14, 1926 at Orgas, WV, he was the son of the late Shirley and Alice Woodrum Stevens.
Brothers Jimmy, Billie, and Shirley Jr.; sister, Dawn; stepmother Bertha (LeeMasters) Stevens; stepbrothers, Carl, Clay, Douglas, Teddy, Joe, Ray, Charlie, infant daughter, Wanda Faye, and son, Roy Jr. preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty Evans Stevens; daughters, Linda Foster and husband, Alfred of Romney, and Brenda Foster and husband, Terry of Scarbro; son Johnny Stevens and wife, Debbie of Massillon, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Alfred IV, Melissa, Melinda, Terry Lee, Angie, Lori, Beverly, Roy III, and Kenny; twenty-three great-grandchildren; five great- great-grandchildren; stepsister Bethel Hunter and husband, Paul, and family; two stepbrothers, Elvis and David; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roy was a lifetime U.M.W.A. member working in the coal mine for over 30 years. He supported several organizations, including the NRA and Fraternal Order of Police. He was a very active member of the Summerlee Freewill Baptist Church before his health declined. He taught Sunday School for many years.
His passions were numerous. He was a true outdoorsman as he loved to hunt and fish; an avid gardener, a retired Forest Fire Warden, and veteran of the US Army. Roy was very patriotic and loved his country by proudly and respectfully flying his flag over his residence. Fond memories are held by the entire family as they held a love of hunting Native American relics on a Sunday afternoon, where he firmly believed in not working on Sunday.
Roy was quite a gentleman. He knew no stranger. Family, friends, and acquaintances would find him in his yard, where he always worked on his flower gardens to beautify his place, or in his garage where he tinkered and invented numerous gadgets around his home. Everyone loved Roy. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, on June 22, 2016 with Reverend Richard Bradley officiating. Internment followed at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens on Pea Ridge Road.
