Rowena Rhodes George

Rowena J. Rhodes George, 96, of Beckley, WV died on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at her home. Born March 15, 1909 at Pax, WV she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lucy McCoy Rhodes. She was a member of the Mount Tabor Baptist Church, Beckley. Rowena was a graduate of Mount Hope High School, salutorian of her graduating class and a member of the Debate Team and yearbook staff. She retired from American Carpets, Beckley as office manager and had also worked for Kopperston Mine Office in the Bookkeeping Department. She and her husband, Lysle, had a record and wallpaper store in Mount Hope. They had managed the Honey In The Rock Motel when it first opened in 1963. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Lysle George on November 19, 1977; and nine brothers, Mackey, Jackson Yancy, Marques Nathaniel, Robert, Owen, Lonnie, Russell Marley, John M. and Noel Addison Rhodes. Survivors include her daughter with whom she resided, Juanita Gates of Beckley; two grandsons, Stephen Gates and wife, Brandie, of Augusta, GA and Michael Gates and wife, Patricia, of Douglasville, GA; one great grandson, Scott Gates; three nieces, Janie Graham of Beckley, Alice Stover of Horneytown, NC and Mildred Ellison of Huntsville, AL and a cousin, Vera Haynes of Stockbridge, GA. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope on Friday, May 13, 2005, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Services will be on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Rev. Michael King officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley WV.
