Roger Dale "Lil Rog" Hammontree, 69 of Lochgelly, WV passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston,WV following a short illness.
Born August 20, 1947 in Lochgelly, WV and he is the son of the late Claude S. and Dorothy Jane Sisson Hammontree. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by siblings, Clarence E. Hammontree, John Wallace Hammontree, Robert E. Hammontree, Howard C. Hammontree, William Ray Hammontree, and Sally Ann Hammontree.
Mr. Hammontree served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. You could find him almost every weekend at the Owls Club on Summerlee Road where you could also find him there on stage singing his favorite karaoke songs or just hanging out with all his friends, both old and new. He enjoyed attending the Veterans Group Meetings with his close Vietnam brothers. After the war he relocated to Dearborn, Michigan for a short time employed with Ford Motor Company. Nothing could keep him away from West Virginia, this was always "home" to him; he moved back and worked as a roofer and carpenter for several years.
Mr. Hammontree is best described by his daughter as "never a complainer or a Debbie Downer, he was a tell-it-like-it-is country boy from the coal camp. His friends were people whom he had been friends with since grade school and always had their backs". Lil Rog had a heart of gold, sure compassion for others, and will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Gregory Hammontree of FL, Jenny Hammontree of Charlotte, NC along with her dog, Moe, who Roger looked at as a grandson; siblings, Betty Devier of Michigan, Ralph Hammontree and wife, Ann of Georgia, Darrell Hammontree of Lochgelly, Larry Hammontree of Oak Hill, Pam Kizer of Mt.
