Robert Lee Thorne,81, of Oak Hill died Friday, September 17, 2004 at his residence following a short illness. He was born March 5, 1923 at Robson, WV a son of the late Sherman and Violet Pennington Thorne. He was a retired employee of New River and Pocahontas Company and the Fayette County Board of Education as an instructor at the Fayette Plateau Vocational Center (TRA). He was a US Army veteran, member of LaFayette Lodge #57 A.F. & A.M, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; Shriner; community service constructing Crooked Run Road Community Church and Rock Lick Community Church; played music on Elmer Hickman's 1950's morning radio show. He was well known and liked in the community and enjoyed gardening and sitting on the porch in the swing. Survivors include his wife, Joy Thorne; five children, Gretta Thorne Patterson and Larry, Mary Lou Thorne Basgier and Jim of Virginia Beach, VA, Debbie Thorne Bibb and Jesse of Oak Hill, Bobby L. Thorne II of Piney View and Barbara Thorne Reed and Frank of Mount Hope; Grandchildren, Kelly Dillman Black & John, Troy Dillman & Karen, Jenifer Patterson, Joy Bibb Baumbush; great grandchildren, Lauren Dorchin, Corey and Cade Black, Caleb Fox and Star Baumbush; one sister, Freida Pittman of Indianapolis, IN and his children at heart, Blackie, Prissi, Bambi and Sugar. We will love and miss you dearly, "before the snow flies." - Husband, Dad, and PaPa Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, September 20, at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Hill with Mr. Steve Stevens officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites and Military Rites by VFW Post #3110. Friends may call Sunday evening, September 19, from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home.
