Robert “Bob” Gene Carter Sr., 80 of Oak Hill, WV gained his Heavenly Wings on January 28, 2022 after a well-fought battle with dementia.
He was born on July 7, 1941 in Oak Hill WV to the late William Ray and Ruth E. Harmon Carter of Mt. Hope.
Bob was a retired heavy equipment operator. He worked 30 plus years in Surface Mining. He was also a 10 year veteran of the U.S. Army.
His hobbies included family time, watching the West Virginia Mountaineers, walking, bowling, and antique automobiles. He attended numerous car shows and started the “Mountaineer Cruisers” car club with the late Buddy Cales and Charlie Rogers. His collection of antique cars won a variety of trophies and awards.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Richard, Ronald, and James Carter along with one sister, Glenna Carter.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 59 years, Sandra Sheehan Carter, sons Robert Carter Jr. and wife Paula, Charles Carter and companion Sarah Prather, daughter Deborah Carter Harding and companion Greg Fernett.
Grandchildren: Crystal and Ben Wolfe, Casandra Carter, Gregory Carter, Courtney Shepherd, Matthew Carter, Brianna and Charles Carter Jr., Brittany Carter and Kayla Dilley.
Great Grandchildren: Madison and Tyler Garrett, Maxton Carter, Owen Wayne, Kohlson Harding, Brantley and Rae Lynn Carter.
Also: Surviving brother Thomas Wayne Carter and sisters Carol and Barbara. The Georgia Carter family and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, on Feb. 2, 2022 at 1pm. Family will gather to celebrate Bob’s life at 10am. Friends may call from 11am to 1pm. His final resting place will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
Honorary Pall Bearers will be: Doug Dancy, Dennis Moore, Gregory Carter, Matthew Carter, Charles Carter Jr., and Tyler Garrett.
The family would like to send a special Thank You to Chief Whisman and the Oak Hill Police Dept. for all the rides they gave “Paw” so he could reach home safely in his time of need.
Also: Thank You to Stone Rise Nursing Home of Charleston and “Paw’s” Granddaughter Crystal Carter and her mother, Becky for their excellent care the last 3 months of his journey.
And: CAMC – Hospice 4th Floor for the private and peaceful environment they provided.
