Robert L. "Bob" Smithson

Robert Leon "Bob" Smithson, 82, of Oak Hill, WV died on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV. Born October 18, 1926 in Huntington, WV, he was the son of the late Robert Aaron and Iris Irene Atkins Smithson. Bob was a retired installer/repairman for AT & T, formerly C & P Telephone. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church at Fayette Heights where he was a trustee and former deacon. He was also a member of the Plateau Amateur Radio Association and was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara Harvey Smithson; a brother, Jerry Smithson; and by two sisters, Ilene Hughes and Elinor Lilly. Survivors include his wife, Polly Ellen Payne Tate Smithson of Oak Hill; his son, Bobby Smithson and wife, Denise of Oak Hill; his two daughters, Linda Cales and husband, Bill of Haymarket, VA and Lisa Miller and husband, Lyle of Livonia, NY; a sister, Imogene Harvey of Jumping Branch; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services and a celebration of Mr. Smithson's life will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill with Pastor Justin Seay and Pastor Hayward Lough officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
