Paul Vernon Rutledge

January 10, 1906 — May 25, 2006

Paul Vernon Rutledge, 100, of Oak Hill, WV went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Glen View Assisted Living in Glen Jean, WV. Born January 10, 1906 at Riverside, WV he was the son of the late James McHenry and Amanda Taylor Rutledge. He married the former Agnes Scott Burke on December 12, 1925. Paul and Agnes had three children, Evelyn Louise, Nancy Ann and James Paul Rutledge. His daughter, Evelyn in 1938, wife, Agnes in 1992 and one great grandson preceded him in death. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by four brothers Clarence, Grover, Ralph and Lester Rutledge and three sisters, Anna Gray, Grace Alley and Ida McClure. Paul was proud to be a coal miner. He first entered the coal mines in 1920 at the age of 14. He worked in the coalfields of West Virginia and Kentucky as a miner, foreman and superintendent until his retirement in 1969. He then painted houses for 10 years before permanently retiring. He was a long time member of the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle where he served as Sunday school superintendent and board member for many years. He was an avid hunter and loved to fish. He very much enjoyed sharing his coal mining experience with anyone who was interested. The family would like to thank all of his caregivers at Glen View, with special thanks to Michelle Worrell, D.J. Haynes and Cindy Johnson. Survivors include one daughter, Ann Kees and husband, Bob, of Oak Hill; one son, Jim Rutledge and wife, Jody of Arden Hills, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren, Robert P. Kees and wife, Barbara, of Cross Lanes, Michael W. Kees and wife, Kathy, and Timothy S. Kees and wife, Lazenda, of Oak Hill, Christopher W. Rutledge, James P. Rutledge Jr., Joseph V. Rutledge, Diana L. Rutledge and Tracy T. Widmer all of Michigan, Paul Vernon Rutledge and Sara Estes of Arden Hill, MN and Mikey Carter of Iowa. Also surviving are 22 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Monday, May 29, 2006, from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Services will be on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle in Oak Hill with Michael Kees, Rev. Robert Isaacs and Rev. Allen Gallimore officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill WV.
