Norma “Geraldine” Underwood Mitchell, 83 years old, of Maple Fork, passed away at her residence on Monday, October 28, 2024. She was born at Price Hill, WV, the daughter of the late Ernest Underwood and Eva Gertrude Lay Underwood. She was a 1959 graduate of Mount Hope High School and retired from Sears Roebuck Company, though the vocation she loved the most was being a mother and wife. She was a 63 year member of the Bradley Free Will Baptist Church where she served over the years as a Sunday School teacher, worked tirelessly during Vacation Bible Schools, the Ladies Auxiliary, and worked with children on Sunday evenings with the Happy Hour group.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Donald “Don” Gene Mitchell Sr. in November 2000. She was also preceded in death by her sisters and a brother, Vivian Underwood as a child, and Edwina Underwood Alderman and husband Frank, Ernest “Gene” Underwood and wife Glenna. She is survived by 3 daughters and 2 sons, Nancy Hutchison (David), Karen Moody (Don), Mary Lynn Corbett, Donald “Donnie” Mitchell Jr (Gina) and James “Jimmy” (Kim) Mitchell. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Amanda (Daniel) Bennett, Kelly (BJ) Henderson, David E. (Heather) Hutchison, James Corbett, Fayth (Brian) Hatcher, Grace Mitchell (fiancé Matt) Conner Mitchell, Caroline Corbett, Caden Mitchell, Cameron Mitchell. She is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters, Christine Wooldridge and Shirley Ewing.
Service is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 1:00 PM at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, WV with Rev. Wayne Peters and the Rev. Daniel Legg officiating. Friends may visit from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM preceding the service. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to thank Dr Kelly Pitsenbarger, who was her physician for over 20 years and the exceptional care provided by Hospice of Southern WV. The family requests any donations be made to Hospice of Southern WV in memory of Norma Mitchell.
