Michael Preston Tompkins

Michael Preston Tompkins, passed away peacefully at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley on Thursday, October 10, 2024 following a long illness. 

Michael was born February 25, 1949 at Oak Hill Hospital to the late W.P. (Bill) Tompkins and Faye (Evans) Tompkins. 

He graduated from Collins High School in 1967 and then from WVU with a business degree. Michael was a ski instructor, ski racer, tennis pro, and a highly respected tennis coach. He owned Ridgeview Racquet Club for many years in Morgantown where he lived the blue and gold life for 45 years. He ran the WV State Tennis Tournament for twenty years and considered his tennis students as his children and his loved responsibility. 

He was a Baptist with a firm belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. 

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, W.P. (Bill) and Faye Tompkins. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his sister, Mary Lou Legg (Wayne); three nephews, Erik Legg (Cindy), Phillip Legg (Lori), and Kace Legg (Jade); three great nieces and nine great nephews. In addition, he is survived by his family from the heart Paul, Shelly, and Brandon Gray as well as many caring friends and previous students. 

Services will be 3:30 P.M., Sunday, October 13, 2024 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill with Pastor Kevin Cormican officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. 

Friends may call one hour prior to services Sunday at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of sympathy be made to Calvary Baptist Church Youth Program.
