Mary E. Sumner Fox

May 16, 1932 — February 1, 2015

After a hard-fought battle with heart surgery and cancer, Mary Elizabeth Sumner Fox, age 82, of Oak Hill, West Virginia slipped quietly into heaven on the morning of February 1, 2015 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. She exemplified great strength and courage throughout her journey and has now left us to mingle with the angels.

Born May 16, 1932 in Fayetteville, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Lola Radford Pate. Also preceding her death were her two brothers, Sherman and John Pate.

She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband of 51 years, George W. Sumner II, who passed in 2005. Following that she was the dear wife of Loren J. Fox, who also preceded her in death in 2013.

Mary always had a smile on her face and a friendly greeting for everyone she met. She was a member of the Fayette Study Club, the Woodland Oaks Garden Club, and past member of the Oak Hill High School Alumni Reunion committee, and looked forward to the Red Devil Reunions each year. Mary was an avid reader and seamstress.

She enthusiastically served others by volunteering her services in all aspects of her church, Oak Hill Baptist. She was a member of Hylbert-Stickler Circle, serving as chairman for many years. She was active in the American Baptist Women’s Ministries of Oak Hill Baptist Church, serving as Church and Community leader for her church as well as for the Fayette Baptist Association. She was a member of the Cross Chapel Sunday School Class. Over the years she often taught children in Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School at Oak Hill Baptist, as well as at Calvary Baptist. Mary served for several years as church clerk for Oak Hill Baptist. She especially enjoyed singing, and was a long time member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir and the OHBC Hand Bell Choir.

Mary enjoyed sharing her faith beyond her own church by being active with other Christians. She was active in planning and taking part in yearly women’s rallies at OHBC and for the Fayette Baptist Association. In addition to her own circle, Mary frequently was also active in the Stannard-Carr Circle and with other circles in her own church, but also attended meetings and the circle at Gentry Missionary Baptist in Sanger. Mary frequently joined in activities with women at Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill. Over the past few years Mary was a member of the weekly meeting of the “Apples of His Eye Bible Study” of the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church in Daniels, West Virginia.

Mary genuinely cared about people, and was happiest when she was surrounded by others. Her faith was a driving force in all she did. She loved life, friends, shopping, desserts, God and her family most of all.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted and loving son, George W. Sumner, III and his wife Kathy of Oak Hill. Mary also leaves behind her stepsons Larry and wife Carroll of Gatewood, and Charles R. Fox and wife Linda of Wheeling. Many step- grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great grandchildren are also left behind.

Mary always embraced her cousins, nieces, and nephews- no matter if they were her relatives or by marriage. She loved people and accepted everyone as if they were her closest relation or friend.

Her relatives, her church family, and her circle of friends, including two ladies who provided loving care for her, Margy Higginbotham and Sadie Handyside, will miss the companionship and their fellowship with Mary.

A celebration of her life and funeral service will be held for Mary at the Oak Hill Baptist Church on Sunday February 8, 2015 at 3:00 PM, with Rev. David White, Rev. David Sneed Rev. Bryan Knight officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Loving wife, devoted mother and homemaker, Mary will always remain in the hearts of her family and countless friends.

Friends and loved ones, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her name to the Oak Hill Baptist Church, 613 Lundale Drive, Oak Hill WV 25901
