Mary Ann, nee Penrod, Goode, 102, long time resident of Oak Hill, West Virginia, born September 26, 1906, in the family log cabin in Wayne County, West Virginia, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Cedar Ridge Healthcare Center, Lebanon, Illinois. Mrs. Goode was born Isabel Spurlock and was adopted at the age of eleven months by Joseph and Julia Penrod of Oak Hill, West Virginia. Mr. Penrod was the former Oak Hill Postmaster and own and operated a grocery store in east Oak Hill. Mrs. Goode was a lifetime member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, serving the Church and the Lord in many capacities at the local and state level. Her greatest joy was in working with educational literature for the children and young people of the Church. She also served as a teacher, counselor, Church Circle member, choir member and United Methodist Women member. Mrs. Goode was a member and officer of the Oak Hill Garden Club and past president of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She was a lifetime member and office holder of the Eastern Star attaining the esteemed Star Point status. Mrs. Goode relocated from West Virginia to O’Fallon, Illinois, in 2004 to be near her youngest son, Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest N. Goode; her parents, Joseph and Julia Penrod of Oak Hill, WV; her step-sister, Margaret of Oak Hill, WV; a step-brother, Joseph Penrod (Beatrice) of Florida; her sisters, Goldie and Pearl of Ohio; her brother, Eugene; and her eldest son, William R. Goode. Surviving are a son, David F. Goode of San Antonio, TX, a grandson, Jason of Dallas, TX; a son, Thomas Goode (Jane) and grandson, Brandon (Sarah) of O’Fallon, IL; a granddaughter Debra Bond (Phillip) and a great granddaughter Kelsen of Kula, Hawaii; a niece, Ann Bailes (Maxwell) of Hurricane, WV; and a nephew, Robert Smith (Sandra) of Cleveland, OH. Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Tyree Funeral Home with Dr. Charles D. Miller and Rev. William Slates officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association Food Pantry, Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 250 Main Street, Oak Hill, WV 25901.
