Mary Jeanne Cassell Cooke, 84, of Memphis, TN passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. S Born December 12, 1929, she grew up in Coalwood, WV, the youngest child of the late E.E. and Mary Buchanan Cassell. Her siblings, Iris Anne, Jim, and Jack preceded her in death. She graduated from Big Creek High School, in War, WV, and earned a B.A. degree in English and Physical education in 1951, from West Virginia University, where she met her future husband. Before starting her family, she taught Physical Education at Towson High School, in Towson, MD; after her children were grown she worked for several years with special needs children as an instructor. In 1985, Dr. and Mrs. Cooke moved from Baltimore to Memphis, where they resided in Harbortown before moving one year ago to Kirby Pines. Mary Jeanne Cooke's greatest joy and satisfaction in life came from caring for her family. Her husband, children and grandchildren will cherish and miss her loving support and generosity, her emotional perceptiveness, her laughter and her dry sense of humor, her love of babies and animals, and the batch of brownies and crock of pickled eggs she always had waiting for family visitors. She leaves her husband of 62 years, Dr. C. Robert Cooke, of Memphis formerly of Oak Hill, WV ; their children, Susan, of Brooklyn, NY, Rob, of Medfield, MA, John, of Marshfield, MA, and Michael, of Nashville, TN; and four grandchildren, Joe and Jeanne Cooke, of Medfield, and Nick and Jared Foretek, of Brooklyn. Graveside rites and committal service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 28 2014 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, WV with Rev. Shirlie Watson officiating.
