Marlene Gerstel Long

July 3, 1939 — August 26, 2016

Our beloved mother, Marlene Patricia Gerstel Long, 77 of Lochgelly, WV died on Friday, August 26, 2016 at her own home after a courageous fight with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Born July 3, 1939 at Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Mary Susko Polly Gerstel and Edmund Carl Gerstel.

Marlene was a retired R.N. She writes, “Ever since I was a young girl, I wanted to be a nurse like my Aunt Julia. After obtaining my B.S. in Missions at St. Paul Bible College, I got my L.P.N., and then at 40 years of age went back to Bluefield State for my R.N. Working at Plateau Medical Center was my mission field. I enjoyed so much loving and helping others and sharing Jesus. What a privilege!”

Marlene was also a retired Sunday School teacher and choir member. She loved music. She sang, played piano, and violin. She studied her Bible every day.

Among her greatest joys were her first great-grandchild, Rory (another redhead) and her grandchildren, Meggie, Dylan (her handyman), and Larkin. She doted on her pets, especially Rusty, a dog with a lethal tail.

Her children were completely devoted to their mother, a witness of her love.

One of her lasting legacies was herding her family to church on Sunday mornings in their best clothes then gathering everyone to Sunday dinner after church. She maintained this tradition of church and eating together as a family. She was the best mother, grandmother, and teacher a family could be blessed with.

She was also a breathtaking redhead.

Her brother, Robert Gerstel of Pennsylvania, preceded her in death. Her late husband, Dr. Ronald Wilson Long who died nine years ago on August 23, was in love with her till he drew his last breath.

Survivors include children, Scott Wilson Long and Julie Anne Long (Jerry Cook) of Lochgelly, WV; grandchildren, Meghann, Dylan, and Larkin; great-grandchild, Rory Long; a sister, Carol Karakis of Akron, OH.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, August 29, 2016 at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene with Dr. Randy James officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.
