Marjorie "Margie" Richmond

Marjorie H. Richmond, 91, of Charleston, formerly of Thurmond, passed away December 19, 2009, at home.

Mrs. Richmond was born May 31, 1918, in Lookout, a daughter of the late Newton W. and Rosa M. (Hinkle) Higginbotham. She grew up in Winona and lived for many years in Thurmond, two places she dearly loved. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband Everette; brothers, Arnett, Herbert, Billie, and Houston Ray; and sisters, Mary, Marie, and Gladys Carol.

She met her future husband, Everette, while working at her Aunt Ida McClure’s restaurant in Thurmond. They were engaged on December 14, 1942, and were married on June 3, 1943 in Charleston. They set up housekeeping in Thurmond.

Mrs. Richmond was a member of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine for more than 50 years, and served as the Worthy Matron of the Thurmond Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was active in many volunteer organizations including the Heart Fund, the Cancer Society, 4-H, and Ladies Aid. She also served for many years as an election official during primary and general elections. She was a member of Thurmond Union Church, and later of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her children, E. Roger and his wife Judy of Wilmington, DE; Larry and his companion Anne Johnson of Baltimore, MD; and Rose Ann Walker and her husband John (with whom she lived), of Charleston, WV; grandchildren Joe and his wife Renee of Bear, DE; Mary Ann and Rachel Richmond of Baltimore, MD; PFC Justin A. Beall, US Army, of Monterey, CA; and Matthew and Daniel Walker of Charleston, WV; and great-grandchildren Trevor and Alissa Richmond of Bear, DE.

Other survivors include sisters Vermont Neff of Danese, WV; Hilma Nolan of Wilmington, DE; and Shirley Nolan of Bear, DE; and brother Jackie Higginbotham and wife Barbara of Rock Hill, SC; former daughter-in-law Judy Whitehill of Baltimore, MD; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews; and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Richmond’s memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, All America Chapter, 2 Players Club Drive, Suite 104
Charleston, WV 25311.

Services will be on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Richard McGuire and Rev. Todd Wright officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
