Madelyn Alma Sutphin White , 102, of Oak Hill, WV died on Wednesday, May 04, 2016 at Hilltop Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hilltop, WV.
Born February 05, 1914 at Oak Hill, WV she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Ida Stepps Sutphin.
A 1932 graduate of Oak Hill High School, Madelyn, nicknamed "Sut," said she never felt like an outstanding student, but, knew she wanted to be a nurse so she went on to graduate from the Raleigh General School of Nursing in 1935 and did post graduate studies at the University of Maryland.
A retired registered nurse, Mrs. White began her career at Raleigh General Hospital as a surgical supervisor. The O.R. was her first love. She was also in charge of training nurses for the "The Nurse's Cadet Corps," a program started and funded by the government during World War II.
Madelyn worked for 35 years at Oak Hill Hospital/Plateau Medical Center retiring in 1981 as O.R. Supervisor. In her day being "on call, " as they were every weekend, required staying at home all weekend in case they were needed, as there were no beepers or cell phones.
When a new man arrived in Oak Hill to become the manager of the Quality Store Madelyn said it was love at first sight. After a wonderful courtship she and C.P. White were married.
Madelyn was a life member of the OHHS/CHS Alumni Association having been named the 2001 Grand Honoree. She was a life-long member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church where she was a member of Group V, United Methodist Women, and sang in the Chancel Choir. Before her failing health prevented her from participating, she was a member of the White Oak County Club, 3-F Group, American Red Cross and 50 year member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clarence Phillip "C.P." White on October 25, 1991; and by two sisters, Georgia Harrah and Frances Lucas.
Surviving are her good friends and caregivers, Debbie and John Pemberton of Oak Hill.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 12:00 P.M. at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
