Louis Joe Kania, Sr., age 88, of Gauley Bridge, WV passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Carolina’s Medical Center, Charlotte, NC.
Born February 17, 1928 in Oak Hill, WV to the late Walter J. Kania, Sr. and Valeria Pieprzyk Kania.
He was the adoring husband of the late Betty Spicer Kania.
Joe is survived by son, Louis Joe Kania, Jr. and wife, Lori of Fredericksburg, VA and their children, Paul Joseph “PJ” Kania and wife, Leah of Lortan, VA, and Sarah Skinner and husband, Chris of Fredericksburg, VA, and son, Patrick Kania and wife, Becky and their children, Abbie Kania, Greyson Kania and Kamryn Lynch of Lancaster, SC.
He was a 1945 graduate of Oak Hill High School where he played football and was selected to play the North South Football All Star Game. He went on to play middle linebacker for WV Tech until he was called to fulfill his duty to his country in the Korean War. Joe earned a Bachelors Degree from Glenville State College where he met the love of his life, Betty. He earned Masters Degrees from Marshall University and West Virginia University.
Joe worked at Alloy Plant in Alloy until his passion for teaching and coaching led him to Gauley Bridge High School. Although Joe never played the game of basketball he was a very successful coach at GBHS. He led the squad to the school’s first ever State Tournament appearance. He went on to be the beloved Principal at Gauley Bridge High School until his retirement in 1986.
Joe was a member of Lions Club International for an award winning number of years.
An outdoorsman, there were many trout fishing trips shared with his two sons and grandkids.
His love for Gauley Bridge High School, Gauley Bridge, West Virginia and its wonderful people was evident to everyone who knew him!
Visitation will be Friday February 26, 2016 from 6 PM to 8 PM AT Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11 AM SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill with burial to follow at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.
