Leonard Douglas Thompson , 100, of Oak Hill, WV died on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV of complications from a fall. Born at Turkey Knob, WV on June 16, 1913, he was the son of the late Donie Douglas and Nellie Samuels Thompson of Prince. Mr. Thompson was a resident of Harvey for the past fifty eight years. He lived his entire life in Fayette County, never wanting to leave his beloved WV. He was a resident of the Summit of Hidden Valley in Oak Hill for the past six months. He retired from the C&O Railroad in 1974, and was a lifetime member of The International Brotherhood of Signalmen. After retirement he joined his wife managing their grocery store in Harvey. The Thompsons were very active members of the Harvey United Methodist Church, where Mr. Thompson served as Sunday School Superintendent and song leader. Leonard was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason at McDonald Warren Lodge 103 A.F. &A.M. in Mt. Hope, from which he received a 50 year service award. Prior to the merger of Warren and McDonald Lodges in 1963 Mr. Thompson served as Master of the Warren Lodge 109 A.F.&A.M. in Thurmond. He also served as Worthy Patron of Chapter 94 (Thurmond) Order of the Eastern Star alongside his wife, (Mamie) who served as Worthy Matron in 1955. Leonard was the devoted husband of the late Mamie H. Thompson for 76 years. He was the eldest brother of the late Ruby Thompson of Hinton, and the late Ruth Thompson and Lewis Thompson of Prince. He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Arnold and her husband Bill, of Buckingham, PA; and loving grandsons William III, of Huntingtown, MD. , John (Anna), of Falls Church, VA. and Bruce (Suni) of Seattle, WA. He enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Grant, Angela, William, Hayden and Iris grow and accomplish so much. They thoroughly enjoyed their Pop and his many stories of “the old days”. Mr. Thompson is also survived by nieces and nephews in Greenbrier County: Frankie Walkup (Chris), Linda Paulin, Alma Green, Pam Paulin, Camilla (Jack) Sizemore, and Corrine (Joe) Grizzel; his nephew, Ed Paulin (Sylvia) lives in Lansdale, PA, a niece, Edith Smith resides in Virginia Beach, VA., nephew, Dwight Paulin lives in Maryland and nephew, David Thompson resides in Prince. Pop Thompson will be missed by his family, neighbors, care-givers, and friends. His sharp memory and wonderful sense of humor were a delight to all who knew him. His favorite pastime was sitting on his front porch at Harvey and saying: “Mine, all mine!” Funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Connie Holly officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity with Masonic graveside rites by McDonald Warren Lodge 103 A.F. and A.M. of Mount Hope. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in his name may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
