Kevin Lane Canterbury, 49, lived every day as if it was the last day of his life; that day turned out to be September 12, 2007, when he died from complications of lung and bone cancer. Born October 1, 1957 at Beckley, WV he was the son of "Sarge" Charles "Chuck" Canterbury and his wife, Barbara "Bobbie" Thomas Canterbury of Mount Hope, WV and the late Betty V. Bowyer Brown. Mr. Canterbury was a resident of Maxwell Hill in Beckley for virtually his entire life. Kevin had many good friends through the years who knew him as a fun-loving, highly spirited man who rarely could avoid a good time or resist a road trip, and who would go out of his way for anybody — old friend or new acquaintance — who needed a helping hand. Besides his friends, family, and co-workers, his primary loves were his various motorcycles starting with a minibike when he was twelve years old and many girlfriends through the years, all of whom had a special place in his heart A construction worker who worked throughout West Virginia, but mainly in the Ohio River Valley, Kevin was a proud member of Laborers International Union Local 543, in Huntington. Other survivors include his brother Steven D. Canterbury and his wife Nancy of Charleston, WV; aunt Mary Ruth Bowyer of Maple Fork, WV; uncle Norton Canterbury and his wife Mary of Mount Hope, WV; cousin Reverend Ronald Bowyer of Capon Bridge, WV as well as several other loving extended family members. The family also especially appreciates Kevin's good friend Robert Nasby who gave tirelessly of himself to help Kevin throughout the last several very difficult months. Kevin's last words were an appropriate reflection of his life: "Put out the fire! Call in the dogs! It’s over, boys." Mr. Canterbury has been cremated. A memorial service will be 2:00 pm Friday, September 21, 2007 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, WV.
