John Musser, 86, of Mullens, WV passed away Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Bowers Hospice House, in Beckley, WV.
Born on October 8, 1937, in Mullens, WV, he was the 9th son, and last surviving child of the late Vernon and Mabel Rosenbaum Musser . In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Lindy Musser, Jesse Musser, Ernest Musser, Pete Musser, Jim Musser, Paul Musser, and sisters Virginia Powell, and Willadeen Snyder.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carrol, his daughter, Dawn, and her husband, Phil, two grandchildren, Matthew ( Taylor) and Ashlee, and one great-grandchild, Jensen, and a host of nieces and nephews.
John joined the Army at the age of eighteen and was stationed in Eslengen, Germany, from September 1956 until December 1958. Upon his return to West Virginia, he worked various jobs before retiring from Laborer’s International Union #453. Soon after, he began his most noteworthy job of picking up his grandchildren from school, which he did from their start of school until they started driving themselves, having taught both of them how to drive before relinquishing his duties and retiring from this role.
John enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, and was very involved in his grandchildren’s lives. He loved dogs, and dearly missed his departed Chihuahuas, Buffy and Sable. He also enjoyed fishing, collecting coins and knives, watching westerns, and tending to his various fruit trees. He never met a stranger, was quick-witted and always ready to share a joke or a story, or to help anyone in need.
John was a faithful member of Mullens Masonic Lodge #151 AF & AM. He attended Mullens Highland Avenue Baptist Church in his earlier years and later in life attended the Oak Grove Christian Church, where he was affectionately known as “The Candy Man,” as he always had a handful of candy to give away when he greeted someone before church services started.
Services will be 12:00 Noon, Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Oak Grove Christian Church Beckley, WV, with Pastor John Whitman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV.
Friends may visit one hour prior to service at the church.
Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Mullens Masonic Lodge #151 A.F. & A.M. and Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Veteran Honor Guard.
