John ‘Jack’ Wilson Vargo, DDS was born in MacDonald, WV on May 3, 1924, son of the late John and Jane Scott Vargo, and passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the age of 93.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margaret Janney Vargo; two daughters, Jan Elizabeth Vargo and Barbara Ann Vargo Rogers and her husband, Dr. Charles Rogers and granddaughter, Kelly Marie; sisters Nadine Foster, Lillian Smith, Mary Kathryn Fickling; and brother George Vargo.
Survivors include his children, Dr. James Vargo (Lori), Dr. John Vargo (Dianna), Dr. Jill Vargo (Tony), and Jackie Martin (Paul); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After graduating from Mt. Hope High School in 1942, he joined the US Marine Corps in the 7th and 11th regiments of the 1st Marines Division during WWII. In the South Pacific, he fought battles on many islands including Cape Glouchester, Guadalcanal, Okinawa and Pellilu. After WWII he returned to Mt. Hope where he began a career as a coal operator in Fayette County.
After his marriage to Margaret Janney of Oak Hill on July 2,1947, he attended Morris Harvey College and West Virginia University. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1957 from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. Upon graduation he started a private dental practice in Oak Hill retiring in 1994. He was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church where he served in many capacities. He was a pilot, avid golfer, loved WVU sports, traveling, and being with family.
His visitation will take place at 11:00 am at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Oak Hill with church service following at 1:00 pm. The burial with take place at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
