John Edward Pawlus Sr., 91, of Scarbro, WV died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Hidden Valley Health Care Center in Oak Hill, WV. Born May 30, 1915, at Beckley, WV he was the son of the late John and Josephine Quasna Pawlus. Mr. Pawlus was a retired miner having retired from the Cranberry Mines of New River Company. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill, 70-year member of the UMWA, member of the Black Lung Association, Loyal Order of the Moose, Knights of Columbus and a member of the board of the New River Health Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Rose Frances Zandlo Pawlus on Jan. 12, 2006; a son, John “Sonny” Pawlus Jr. and daughter-in-law, Carol Pawlus; two brothers, Steve and Joe Pawlus; half brothers, Eddie and Frank Braddock; half sisters, Bernice Williams and Helen Shur. Survivors include a son, Steve Pawlus and wife, Rita of Scarbro; six grandchildren, Sandy Pawlus, Cynthia Dorman, Cherrie Thomas, Lisa Anderson, Brian Pawlus, and Greg Pawlus; seven great-grandchildren, Amber Dorman, Ginny Dorman, Hannah Thomas, John Thomas, Ray Pawlus, Shyanne Pawlus and Hunter Anderson; a half sister, Mary Funari of Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, where a Prayer Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.
