John Dillon

October 5, 1947 — January 1, 2016

John (Ernest Eugene) Dillon , 68, of Kincaid, WV , left this earth to join his parents and 16 brothers and sisters on the other side of the veil on Friday, January 01, 2016 at Hilltop Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hilltop, WV.

Ernest Eugene Dillon was born on October 5, 1947 to Blair and Georgia Larue Dillon in his family home in the coal camp of Page. His brothers renamed him "Honest John" which quickly became just "John."

John contracted polio, then called infantile paralysis because mostly children, who either died or were paralyzed by the disease, caught it. Dr. Merritt, the camp physician arranged for John's father to take him by train to the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children in Philadelphia, PA, were he was treated for most of the next 5 years. Wearing braces on his legs, he arrived home knowing no one but his father. His earliest memory of home was looking up at the moon the first night and wishing he were "back home" in the hospital. His sister Sally sat up with him that night, keeping him company, as she did many of those first nights.

He loved hunting, fishing and peanut butter fudge.

As the last surviving member of his immediate family, all the rest have preceded him in death as have some nieces and nephews.

Surviving are many nieces and nephews in several states, in addition to his best friend of 62 years, Owen Prather of Page; friend and caregiver, Dorothy Rudy of Page and her family of Elton; Jack and Betsy Beamon; and his two adopted (they adopted John) "grandsons," Hunter and Artie Stump.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 3:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Following the service Mr. Dillon will be cremated.
