On Monday, November 9, 2009 the Lord called another member of America's greatest generation home. John "J.C." Charles Gwinn, Sr., 85, of Mount Hope, WV died in an area hospital after a short illness. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Born May 18, 1924 at Mount Hope, WV he was the son of the late Hazel and Emily Swift Gwinn. Mr. Gwinn was retired from the postal system with 29 years in government service. He was a World War II combat veteran having served in the 34th Army Division. He was an avid golfer and a former member of the White Oak Country Club and Grandview Country Club. He was a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Temple. J.C. was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joan T. Graff Gwinn, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include three children, John C. Gwinn and wife, Dianna of Ghent, Jan Caye Londeree and husband, Ray of Mount Hope and Tom Swift Gwinn of Mount Hope; special grandson, David Gorby and three other grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous cousins. Private services will be held on Thursday November 12, 2009 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. David McCoy officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 3110 of Oak Hill.
