Dr. James H. Shelton, a highly respected dentist in Oak Hill, WV for over 60 years passed away of natural causes at home March 19, 2013. He was 96. Born January 13, 1917 at Lockwood, WV he was the son of the late Eddie Victor and Flora A. McCutchen Shelton. Dr. Shelton was a father of four, grandfather to 14 and great-grandfather to 11, all who survive. He leaves a legacy that he and his beloved Mary created prior to her preceding him in death September 2005. Surviving family members are: a sister, Margaret Summers of Lockwood; daughter, Joan Shelton Whanger and husband Tom of Newport News, VA with their four children and five grandchildren; Joan’s twin, James H. Shelton, II, and wife Barbara who live between homes in Florida and Indiana and have two daughters and two grandchildren; son, Dr. Charles Shelton and wife Millie who reside in Oak Hill and have three children and two grandchildren; son, Richard Shelton and wife Cathy and their five children and three grandchildren who all live in Newport News. Dr. Shelton’s passion was Lions Club International and he celebrated his 50 year Monarch membership in the Oak Hill club in 2007 where he served as Club Secretary for more than 20 years. He served in multiple prominent positions throughout Lions Clubs International among which were Oak Hill club President, District Governor, International Councilor and Sight Foundation Chairman just to name a few. As a dentist he was proud to have been dentist to 4 generations of some families. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Oak Hill for over sixty years where they brought up their children. The family will receive visitors at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Friday, March 22, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bryan Knight and Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Entombment will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum beside his beloved Mary.
