James H. Ford

Surrounded by his loving family, James H. Ford, age 85 of Charlton Heights, WV passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 22 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.

Born on June 15, 1929 in Prudence, Fayette County, James was the son of the late Reverend Max Ford and Marie Saunders Ford.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ramona Davis Ford; his daughter Michelle F. Laird and husband, Bill of Oak Hill; and his son James Gregory Ford and fiancée, Yeda Mancini of North Brunswick, New Jersey.

Left to cherish his memory are seven grandchildren Dr. Amanda Dye and her husband, Wesley of Hurricane, Dr. Kathryn S. Obrynba and husband, Daren of Columbus, Kara S. Bowser and husband, Aaron of Pittsburgh, Robert J. Stephens of Morgantown, Brittany E. Ford of Philadelphia, Chelsea L. Ford of Hillsborough, New Jersey, and Mackenzie L. Ford of Morgantown; and three great-granddaughters Ella, Madelyn, and Nora Dye of Hurricane. He is survived by his sister Ramona Craigg of Rockford, Illinois.

James was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean War era. He was a graduate of Nicholas County High School and West Virginia Tech. He was a long-time employee of Marathon Coal Bit Company in Smithers where he served as a Vice President and Controller. He was Past-President and Secretary of the Upper Kanawha Valley Chamber of Commerce, two-time Past-President of the Montgomery Lions Club, Past-Zone Chairman for District 29-N, Lions Club International, and was an active member of the Montgomery United Methodist Church where he was the founder of the United Methodist Mens Group.

James was an avid WVU Mountaineer fan, a compassionate lover of dogs and animals (particularly his Jack Russell Terrier Ben), and was a true friend to all who met and knew him. However, the source for his love of life and satisfaction could always be found in the company of his loving family.

The family expresses its sincere appreciation for the compassionate and loving care that James received while a resident at the Summit at Hidden Valley Assisted Living Facility, Hidden Valley Nursing Home, and for the comfort and that he received by the professional staff at the Bowers Hospice House. Special gratitude is also expressed to Reverend Bill Slates for his friendship and spiritual guidance.

Consistent with his wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. In reflecting on the life of James H. Ford, it can be said: “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
