Jack Tazwell Underwood, 85 of Hilltop, WV, died on February 3, 2013 at Hilltop Nursing and Rehab Center after a short illness. Born on September 16, 1927 in Beaver, WV he was one of 14 children born to longtime Oak Hill residents the late George Robert and Crystal L. Martin Underwood. Jack was a U.S. Army veteran with tours in Germany and Okinawa, Japan. After retiring from the Army, Jack married and had his son, (Jack) Darrell. He worked most of his life in construction and carpentry. He loved the outdoors, and could often be found hunting on Beury Mountain in Fayette County or fishing near Thurmond. Survivors include his son, Darrell Underwood and wife, Kim of Bluefield, VA; his only grandson, Michael Keith Underwood of Morgantown; sisters Lillian McClung of Hilltop and Sally Bloxton of Red Star, Donna Smith of Oak Hill, and Sharon Campbell of Arizona; brothers Robert Underwood of Fayetteville, and David Underwood of Ocean Springs, MS; and many nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn his loss, is his roommate and friend, Arliss Pack of Hilltop. A very special thanks and appreciation goes to the wonderful staff and caregivers of Hilltop Center. This was Jack's second home as well as his second family. Mr. Underwood donated his body to the WVU Human Gift Registry in Morgantown. Private services will be held at a later date.
