Jack A. Davis

Jack Arthur Davis, 83, of Scarbro, WV died Friday, April 30, 2004 at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill after a short illness. He was born at Beards Fork on July 8, 1920 son of the late Rupert and Cora Lee Settle Davis. He was a retired mechanic. Mr. Davis grew up at Mulberry Branch where he attended a one room school before going to Montgomery High School. He worked for the Page mine before entering the US Army in 1942. After basic training at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma he served in England and France. Mr. Davis was in battle for eight months before being severely wounded. He received a Purple Heart, Combat Medic Badge and the Bronze Star. Following his discharge from the Army, he resumed employment in the coal mines until 1952 when and Thelma located to Akron, Ohio where he was employed for a short time by Mohawk Rubber Company. He later trained as an auto mechanic and was employed by Chrysler Corp. for 30 years. Mr. Davis retired due to medical problems in 1978. He was a life member of VFW 8487 Mogadore, Ohio, a past Ohio all state county council commander, past member of the DAV and Paralyzed Veterans Association. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Carney Davis, whom he married on January 31, 1942. Surviving are his wife, Freda Mae Pennock Kinsler Davis; one son, James Terry Sicle of Charleston, SC; four step sons, Robert Kinsler of Iron Station, NC, Gary Kinsler of Bessemer City, NC, Dennis Kinsler of Scarbro, WV and Alan Kinsler of Lochgelly, WV; one aunt, Forest Radford of Jacksonville, NC; one uncle, Newman Settle of Danese, WV and several cousins. Funeral will be Monday, May 3, at 1:00 PM at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Michael Kessinger officiating. Burial will follow in Settle Cemetery, Robson, WV. Friends may call Sunday, May 2 from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home. Donations of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 129 Main Street, Beckley, WV 25801.
