Hugh S. Weeks, 83, of Maxwell Hill, Beckley, WV died peacefully, Friday, April 17, 2009 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley following a long illness. Born September 8, 1925 at Kellysville, WV, he was the son of the late Daniel and Etta Whitlow Weeks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Tommie Weeks and Jack Weeks, Ethel Weeks and Geneva Canterbury Dickinson and one special granddaughter, Sherri Lynn Williams of Beckley. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 63 years, Sonia Williams Weeks; one daughter, Junie G. Williams and husband, Gary of Beckley; one grandson, Gary David Williams and wife, Ashley of Beckley; two great grandsons, Brandon Pearce of Dunn, NC and David Colton (Cole) Williams and one great granddaughter, Emily Lynn Williams of Beckley. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He entered the US Army in 1943 and served in Europe with the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division. He was discharged in 1945. He enlisted in the USAF in July 1951 and remained there until his retirement, March 1970. He held the rank of Technical Sgt., upon his retirement. He served tours of duty in Europe, Japan, Tripoli Libya, and Vietnam. He was an Air Force recruiter in Beckley from December 1959 until January 1964 and from there he went to Tripoli, Libya. Upon his return, he was an Air Force recruiter in Huntington, WV from 1965 until 1969, then was sent to Vietnam where he served until his retirement from the USAF. Hugh was a receipient of the following medals, the Combat Infantry Badge, The Bronze Star with a V device with the V for combat valor, the European Middle Eastern theatre ribbon with a bronze arrowhead and three campaign stars, Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe, ETO Occupational medal, the Army good conduct medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, the Air Force good conduct medal with one silver oak leaf cluster and one bronze cluster, National Defense Service medal, American Theatre medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam medal, Longevity medal with a silver oak leaf cluster, and Expert Rifleman medal. He was employed by Consolidation Coal Company as truck driver until his retirement in October 1982. He was a member of the UMWA District 17, Local Union 1330 from 1975 until the present. He was paid for life membership in the American Legion Post #32, paid for life membership in the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #18, and paid for life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #15050. He was a member of the Bradley Free Will Baptist Church since April 1985. Friends may call from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening, April 19, 2009 at the Bradley Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Bradley Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Daniel Legg and Rev. Wayne Peters officiating. Friends may call at the church from noon until service time on Monday. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, WV.
