Harold T. "Hal" Corker, 62, of Springfield, VA formerly of Oak Hill, WV died June 1, 2006 of cancer at his home. He was the registrar at the medical education campus of Northern Virginia Community College in Springfield. Born in Oak Hill, WV he was the son of the late Harold Henry and Hazel Marie McNeil Corker. Hal was a 1962 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill. He was an industrial management graduate of West Virginia University in 1969, received a master’s degree in contract and procurement management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1977 and an associate degree in travel and tourism from NVCC. A retired Army lieutenant colonel, he worked for more than 10 years at NVCC. He was the registrar of the Annandale campus from 1999 to 2004; an office services specialist at the Woodbridge campus from 1998 to 1999 and the assistant coordinator for veterans affairs at the Annandale campus from 1995 to 1998. In 1993, he retired from the Army Corps of Engineers after serving 22 years. His area of expertise was contracting for military construction. In that capacity, he served on the Army staff in the Pentagon from 1987 to 1991, and he was the Army’s coordinator for US-Egyptian defense-related industrial activities, assigned to the US Embassy in Cairo from 1991 to 1993. His awards included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. A Springfield resident since 1980, Hal was often seen walking or jogging around the neighborhood and the adjacent South Run District Park. An older sister, Pat Law preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Carole Page and their daughter, Ashley Corker; three sisters, Alice Wills of Montgomery, Ala, Margaret Auxier of Virginia Beach, VA and Dara Corker of Beckley, WV and one brother, Jack Corker of Las Vegas, Nevada. In loving memory, a "celebration of life" memorial service was held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel, Alexandria, VA. A celebration sit-down brunch followed the service at the Hotel Hilton in Springfield. Internment with full military honors will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, July 31, 2006 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the NVCC Education Foundation, c/o Harold T. Corker Scholarship, 4001 Wakefield Chapel Road, Annandale, VA.
