Glen Walter Warden

Glen Walter Warden, age 85, of Oak Hill, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, after a long illness. Born September 20, 1928, at Long Branch, WV, he was the son of the late Milton Jay and Jency Evelyn Canterbury Warden. He was preceded in death by a son Paul Douglas Warden , a brother Milton Edward (Mickey) Warden, a sister Patsy Ruth Warden Compton, and a nephew Randy Compton. Glen graduated from Mullens High School in 1946 where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Mullens Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. He enjoyed working with young children and he was always willing to help anyone in need. He officiated high school football and basketball games and umpired Babe Ruth baseball. Glen worked for several different coal companies as a surface mine foreman and retired at the age of 70. He was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church where he enjoyed Sunday School and the Men's Bible Class. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Louise Winkler Warden, a son Glen Carter Warden and his wife Barbara Lee Bright Warden of Beckley, his daughters, Sherry Lynn Warden Martin and her husband David of Oak Hill, and Bobbi Gale Warden of Huntington, his grandsons Douglas Fitzgerald and wife Pamela of Fayetteville, Scott Warden and wife Missy of Knoxville, TN, Jason Warden and wife Shannon of Knoxville, TN and step granddaughter Dawn Smith and husband Danny of Dothan, his great grandsons Ethan Warden and Gabriel Warden and great granddaughters Lauren Warden and Ainsley Warden of Knoxville, TN, and step great granddaughters, Sadie Martin of Dyersburg, TN and Krystal Smith of Dothan, his brother Jay C. Warden of Winchester, KY, sister, Marylane Warden Sandy and her husband Robert of Salem, VA, brother-in-law Carl Compton of Mullens, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ryan Newell, the staff of Amedisys Home Health Care, the staff of Hospice of Southern West Virginia and all who have cared and supported us during this difficult time, with a special thanks to niece Dinah Lefler for all she did for so long, and to Amy Lanham who was a God-send to us all. As a final act of giving, Glen donated his body to the Human Gift Registry at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with his grandson Pastor Jason Warden officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services on Saturday, May 3, 2014. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.
