GEORGE SCOTT VARGO, born in Mount Hope in 1926, died early Thursday morning at Charleston Area Medical Center, following a short illness. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U~,S.. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga. He was a former coal operator, served as a federal mine inspector, and was a supervisor until his retirement. He was a 48 year member of the Mount Hope Lions Club, where he served as president and was in charge of the Adopt-a-Highway Program for which he received state honors, inlcuding the Leonard Jarrett award. George was an active member of the United Methodist Church where he served in multiple areas including choir director and superintendent of Sunday school. He received a Associate Business Degree from Beckley College. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jane Vargo, his first wife Patricia Ann Vargo, two sisters, Lilian Smith of Florida, and Nadine Foster of Oak Hill. Survivors include his second wife, Janet Payne Vargo, a brother, Dr. John Wilson Vargo and his wife Margaret of Oak Hill, a sister, Mary Katherine Fickling of Norfolk, Virginia, a daughter, Kim St. Clair and her husband Sam of Stafford, Virginia, and a son, G. Scott Vargo and his wife Brenda of Mount Hope. Beloved step-children Car a Pomeroy of Beckley, Johnny Payne and his wife Sandra of Bluefield, and Jimmy Payne of Virginia. Six precious grandchildren, Justin Vargo and his wife Lesley of Oak Hill, Courtney Vargo of Mount Hope, Tricia, Chris, Craig and Kyle St. Clair of Stafford, Virginia. Step-grandchildren include Jenna Bowen of Norfolk, Virginia, Virginia and Carmen and Aaron Payne of Bluefield and one great-grandchild, Garrett Scott Vargo of Oak Hill and numerous nieces and nephews. George will be remembered for his love of singing, whisling, aptitude for directions, dedication to his community, and his quick-witted sense of humor, and zest for life. Services will be Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Mt. Hope, with Reverends James Shepherd and Richard Allen officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV with members of the Mount Hope Lions Club serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be Friday, September 22, 2003 from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tyree Funeral Home, Mt. Hope, WV.
