George W. Sumner, Ii

George W. "Skeeks" Sumner, II, 81, Oak Hill, WV went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 14, 2005 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV following a short illness. George was a member of and faithfully served the Oak Hill Baptist Church. Born April 24, 1923 at Sanger, WV he was the son of the late George W. and Geneva Rainey Sumner He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of the U.M.W. Local 8843. He was a member of the VFW and a proud veteran of World War II, having served with the 383rd AAA (Army Anti-Aircraft) Battery B in the Pacific Theatre in battles and campaigns in New Guinea and the South Philippines. His many military accolades included the Bronze Service Star, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medals and Sharpshooter Medals. Always appreciative of the outdoors and nature, after retirement George spent many hours gardening, landscaping and feeding and observing wild birds and animals. Extremely benevolent and generous he was ever watchful to see where and how he could lend a hand to individuals in need. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Jenkins. George is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 52 years, Mary Elizabeth Pate Sumner; son, George W. Sumner, III and wife, Kathy, of Oak Hill; one sister, Joann Turley of Oak Hill; one brother, Daniel T. Palmer of Oak Hill and a host of relatives and special friends. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM and on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Oak Hill Baptist Church from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Funeral service will be on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at 1:00 P.M. at Oak Hill Baptist Church with Rev. David White officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV with military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post #3110, Oak Hill.
