Gene Spahr Skeldon

November 3, 1929 — November 5, 2014

Bertha Gene Spahr Skeldon or "Gene" as she preferred to be called, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill. She was 85 years old, born on November 3, 1929. Her passing was due to complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Gene was the fourth of eight children born to the late Oliver M. and Kathryne Burke Spahr.

She as born in Dunbar, WV but grew up in Fairmount, IN. Following her graduation from Fairmount High School in 1947, she attended Adrian College in Adrian, MI where she earned an Associate Degree in secretarial work. From Adrian, she moved to Washington, DC where she worked for the U.S. Navy Department. It was here that she met her future husband, Bill. They were married in Washington on September 15, 1950.

Following Bill's discharge from the Navy, the Skeldons moved to Toledo, OH where she continued to work in several secretarial positions. In 1957 they moved to Huntington, IN as Bill answered the call to the Christian ministry. They also lived in Auburn, IN, Monroe, MI, Mishawaka, IN and West Alexandria.

Gene served in numerous capacities in the church as wife of her husband. She was a deaconess at the Oak Hill First Brethren Church, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served the Lord wherever needed. Not only was she a dedicated Christian, but also an excellent wife and pastor's wife.

She spent the last twenty years of her working career at the Fayette County Child Development, Head Start, from where she retired in 2004.

Two of Gene's special interests were knitting and running. She knitted over 200 baby sweaters as well as many other items of clothing and household items. She was a good runner and ran in numerous races ranging from a one mile run to 26 mile marathons and one ultra marathon of 50 miles. She nearly always received awards, placing at least third in every race.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, William Grant Skeldon; brother, Joseph Spahr; and sister, Marjorie Warren.

Surviving are her husband, Rev. William R. "Bill" Skeldon; three sons, Mark Edward Skeldon and wife, Melanie, John Warren Skeldon and wife, Joyce and Matthew Dale Skeldon and wife, Jane; one sister, Rosalie Thorne and four brothers, Herman Spahr, William Spahr, James Spahr and Donald Spahr.

She is also survived by three granddaughters, Jenna Skeldon, Suzanne Skeldon and Katherine Skeldon.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Rudell Bloomfield officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Saturday, November 8, 2014 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
