Gary Lee King , 76, of Oak Hill, WV died on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV.
Born March 28, 1940 at Robson, WV he was the son of the late Mayford Early and Myrtle Nettie McNeely King.
Gary spent four years on the water as a Merchant Marine, which he dearly loved. He was then drafted into the US Army serving in Vietnam and Korea. He did his training in Fort Carson, CO making the highest grade to become a Specialist Radar Operator on the DMZ in Korea for thirteen months. He was assigned to headquarters Co. 1st and 5th Cavalry. Every other week he was TDY across the river to the 9th Cavalry. A very proud soldier, Gary received the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal.
After his discharge he returned to civilian life working for Republic Steel in Cleveland. At the time of his retirement he had mastered every job they had.
Gary was a friend to everyone that met him. Around Oak Hill he was known as the Quarter Man as he had collected State Quarters until his failing health brought a halt to this hobby.
He attended the Mulberry Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald King; sisters, Ardalee Settle, Helen Bickford, Kathleen O'Connell, Madeline O'Connell, Mona Greenstreet and Cheri Erick; two life long friends, Buddy Bandy and Ermil Dunafee; and his grandmother King, who he loved dearly and talked about all the time.
Those left to cherish his memory include his fiancee and caregiver since his illness, Sue Lively; two sons, Darryl (Tammi) King of Fayetteville and Danny King of Robson; two daughters, Terri (Don) Hardman of Robson and Mona King of Joplin, MO; sister, Sharon Kitchen of Pratt; and grandchildren, Shane King, Travis Hardman, Kayelyn King, Kayla King and Melissa King.
Also surviving are a nephew whom he loved dearly, Tommie Lang of Harpers Ferry; a host of other nieces and nephews; and a cousin Charles L. King of Santa Barbara, CA.
Services will be on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will be at Pax Community Cemetery with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.
Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
