Frederick “Rick” A. Rutledge, Jr, 63, of Scarbro, WV, died peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV on August 15, 2014 after enduring ALS for 14 months.
Born March 27, 1951, in Marietta, OH, he is the son of Marlys Rutledge of Cincinnati, OH and the late Fred Rutledge.
Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Kathryn Young Rutledge; brother William Rutledge and his wife, Fran; sister Mary Kennard and her husband, Chris; three wonderful children: Rosemary Miller and husband, Eric, of Cincinnati, OH; Alex Rutledge and wife, Amanda, of Greensboro, NC; Andrew Rutledge and husband, Greg Millikin, of Alexandria, VA; three perfect grandchildren: Alexis Sky Rutledge, Nathaniel Boyd Miller, and Lucas Benjamin Miller; nieces Alison Myers (Dave) and Megan Bunting (John); nephews Dan True and Josh True; grandnieces and nephews Ethan, Aidan, and Emily Myers; brother, friend, and guardian angel Larry Bledsoe, and countless other friends and parishioners.
Rick was an Episcopal priest, serving congregations in the New River Episcopal Ministries.
He graduated in 1969 from Collins High School and from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC with a degree in industrial engineering.
Rick worked as an engineer at Union Carbide, Long-Airdox Co., Ingersoll-Rand, Xaloy Manufacturing, Paymover, Machine Services, and A.L.Lee. He also sold insurance for Banker’s Life and Casualty.
Rick was an avid bridge-player and outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, gardening, rafting, coaching and refereeing soccer, and golfing.
Rick enjoyed many years as a Master Garderner and worked to promote local farming through his Christmas tree farm, high tunnels, the Farmland Protection Board, and the Fayette County Farmers’ Market.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Kelly Avenue, Oak Hill, WV at 3:00PM on Sunday, August 17th, with visitation from 1:00-3:00PM at St. Andrew’s.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Memorial Fund, 345 Kelly Avenue, Oak Hill WV 25901 or Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley WV 25801.
Brothers and sisters, life is short and we haven't much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind. The blessing of God Almighty, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you always. Amen.
